Descript review: a fine editor, a middling noise tool — 68/100
Descript is a genuinely modern editing suite in which noise removal is one good feature among forty. Scored purely as noise software — which is this desk’s only job — it pays suite prices for filter results.
What Descript is
Descript edits audio and video the way you edit a document: delete the sentence from the transcript and it vanishes from the recording. Studio Sound is its cleanup pass — regenerate the speech, drop the room, lift the voice. Our remit here is narrow on purpose: this row scores Descript as noise cancellation software, because that is the shelf this site audits.
Reading the row
Silence (8/10). Studio Sound’s rescue quality is real and at times startling — in the same family as Adobe’s Enhance, with the same occasional synthetic sheen at full strength. Keeping the slider nearer 60% than 100% is the community’s standard advice, and ours.
Toll (6/10). You install and learn a full production suite to reach one filter. For an editor-person that is no toll at all; for a meetings-person it is the whole toll.
Wallet (6/10). Free plan: 60 minutes of media processing per month, 720p watermarked-limited export; paid tiers are Hobbyist $16/mo annual ($24 monthly), Creator $24/mo annual ($35 monthly), Business $50/mo annual ($65 monthly). Fair for the suite, expensive as a denoiser — which is the comparison this table exists to make.
Fit (6/10). Post-production only — no live mode — but cross-platform and browser-capable, which keeps the score off the floor.

Nobody should buy Descript to remove noise. Some people should buy Descript and be pleased the noise removal came along.
What the score refuses to hide
Where the 68 comes from, in costs:
- Studio Sound is gated: the free tier’s 60 minutes a month evaporates on one episode, and “limited” access starts at the $16-annual Hobbyist tier.
- No live processing — meetings are out of scope entirely.
- Full-strength Studio Sound can make voices sound re-recorded in a booth that doesn’t exist; tasteful settings are on you.
- Plan limits are scattered across a long pricing page; pinning down exactly what your tier includes takes more clicks than it should — the Candor deduction.
Who should actually use it
Buy Descript if you edit shows weekly and want the transcript-first workflow — the noise tool then rides along at no marginal cost. If cleanup is the whole errand, Enhance does the same family of trick for free, and Cleanvoice charges by the hour instead of by the month.
